The Tricryptogon

Banny And Lissa
by Dave Lerner

Sorry about the absence. I hope to be back by September 15 October 6, with a full explanation. Or, at least, a decent excuse.

Well, we've gotten some discussions going on the Message Board, and I've gotten a couple of Letters. Thank you. And if you haven't posted yet, please join in.

Part 2: New Friends And Old
Chapter 44: NO NO NO NO NO!

Banny asked, "Hey, you said there were a bunch of other gonners. Why don't we go after them?"

"They are either too weak to be a threat or too powerful for you to defeat or even survive." Mr. Fwuzzums said. "You need to worry about Panderson."

Banny said, "I haven't known Lizzie as long as Lissa has, but I'm her friend, too. And I sorta owe her big-time. I'm not going to hurt her."

Nicoletta sighed. "The two of you need to stop acting childish! You need to put your feelings aside and concentrate on the task at hand. Even if that task is fighting your best friend."

"No, we don't! No, NO, NO, NO, NO!! Don't make me get avatastic on both your asses!" shouted Lissa. There was a horrific rending sound.

"What was that?" asked Nicoletta.

"Ah. That was the sound of Cheng's claws scratching through the steel arm of the sofa as though it were soft cheese. A feat, of course, irreproducible by any cat."

"Her powers have advanced that far that soon. In that case... on the other hand, your friend Elizabeth may be completely innocent."

"That's what I've been saying." Lissa used her right hand to pick metal shavings from the claws on her left paw.

"But if she is, then someone else is the gonner. And your friend's in terrible danger. She could be framed for a number of crimes, including murder, if the gonner is worried about getting caught, or needs her out of the way, or just likes the idea of an innocent woman going to prison."

Taking up the thread, Mr Fwuzzums added, "The gonner wilI have no qualms about murdering her if she learns too much, or, to parallel Corvair's statement, if the gonner needs her out of the way or just likes the idea of killing her. We all know gonners consider torture and murder fun."

"All right, already! We'll do it! But this is to help Lizzie. Got it?"

"Good. Now, because Panderson Real Estate is a small private firm, we cannot discreetly obtain employment for the two of you as we would like. Instead, perhaps you and O'Herlihy could claim you are interested in purchasing a house. I could-"

"I can get us in," Lissa whispered. "That's not the problem."

Banny said, "we need all the info you have. I'll read it, Lissa, if you don't want to. This is going to have to be our number one priority, though. We'll have to worry about the Gilligan's Island song later. If that's all right."

Not a single person (human or dogling) voiced an objection.

Back in Lissa's apartment she picked up the phone, stopped. She put the phone down. And picked it up again. Please re-read the previous two sentences about five or six times. After you lose track of how many times she's done this, have Banny take the phone out of her hand, and hang it up.

Lissa looked up it Banny. "You know they're wrong, but let's just say... Even if someone is a gonner.. that someone could still come back, right? That's what Chuckie said, right? Okay, he might have lied about other things and we know gonners lie 'cos, hey, Vanessa, and okay, he tried to kill me and you, but maybe the coming back thing's one of those rules, right?"

"You okay to make the call?"

"Yeah. It's gotta be me. But I know Lizzie's a good guy. Hell, she deserves this Ring more than me."

"You're standing by a friend. Don't sell yourself short. Listen, I'm going next door. Try to get those two to look into this gonner antidote. I mean, I agree with you Lizzie's a good guy. But it'd be good to have the stuff on hand, you know. Maybe the gonner's a friend of hers, who needs our help."

Lissa shook her head. "I don't think they even think it's possible. How you gonna convince them?"

"You're not the... you're not the only one who's powers are advancing."

"Banny... You would... you'd threaten that poor injured blind woman and her dog? For me?"

"If I have to."

She hugged him. Tightly.
